Technical Assistance and Support
The project staff coordinates their efforts with the Centers for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD's) in Florida to provide effective and efficient technical assistance through on-site visits, dissemination of resource materials, and crisis intervention via telephone or electronic mail. A person-centered teaming approach is used to provide assistance, build partnerships among students, family members, interventionists, educators, social workers and others.
Lending Library
Florida Outreach Project staff maintain a resource library for families and service providers. The library includes videos, books, journal articles, and training modules which are available for checkout.
Training
This project provides training to family members and professionals in the following ways:
- Statewide training by nationally recognized experts in the field of deaf-blindness
- Year long training institutes for selected school districts
- Training activities for families
- Co-sponsoring speakers at the annual CARD Conference and the Florida Department of Education Weekends With the Experts (WWE)
Collecting Census Data
Accurate identification assists the project in determining training and needs of our state. In addition, maintaining accurate census data for the federal deaf-blind registry ensures federal support for technical assistance to all the states and territories. Florida is the fourth largest state with a growing population and increasing technical assistance and training needs. A family member or any professional working with an individual who is deaf-blind can register a person who is deaf-blind aged birth to 22 by contacting the Florida Outreach Project.
