The Florida Outreach Project for Children and Young Adults Who Are Deaf Blind is based in Gainesville Florida at the University of Florida Health Science Center. We are funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, and serve the entire State of Florida.
Mission
The Florida Outreach Project is committed to promoting educational practice that leads to the full participation of people who are deaf blind as active members of the community. This is accomplished through person centered approaches focused on building the capacity of local teams and fostering self determination of the individual .
Philosophy
We believe that,
- There is no single profile of a student who is deaf blind
- Students who are deaf blind can participate in every activity
- Students who are deaf blind communicate in a variety of ways
- Many people who are deaf blind can get around their communities independently
- Students who are deaf blind can be included in every teaching environment
- Educational teams are critical
- Families are key players on those teams
